PB & J Protein Balls

Having trouble with sugar cravings?!

I have a solution for you to fix that!  And it’s probably something you aren’t expecting….PROTEIN!

Eating too little protein can be a major cause of sugar cravings.  When your diet lacks adequate protein and is fueled more by refined carbohydrates, this leads to a sudden spike in blood sugar, then a rapid drop, which may cause you to crave a quick sugar fix to regulate it.

Now, here me when I say carbs are NOT bad.  Let’s not demonize food groups because they all serve a purpose.

BUT if you notice yourself hungry or craving sugar an hour or two after you eat a meal, this may be a sign that you need to increase the amount of protein on your plate.

Getting an adequate amount of protein is so helpful in eliminating the desire to snack or binge eat because it keeps us satiated and full.

One of my kids is a carb-lover so I’m always trying to think of ways to get more protein into him so we don’t enter the low-blood sugar danger zone.

These no bake, protein packed peanut butter & jelly bites are one of my solutions for a fast snack or light meal on the go. They taste like a treat and leave you feeling good!

My secret ingredient is a berry flavored plant-based protein powder that has a high amount of protein. It’s called the Juice Plus Perform and has 25 grams of protein per serving.

I combine this with some healthy fats from peanut butter, a few other ingredients, and voila! You have yourself (or your kids) a healthy snack that will satisfy their needs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup old fashioned oats (I prefer to grind mine in the blender for a finer texture)

  • 1 scoop Juice Plus berry flavored protein powder (or 1 scoop of vanilla protein)

  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce

  • 1/2 cup organic freeze-dried strawberries

  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup

  • 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips

  • Pinch of sea salt

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a bowl. Mix well and form into 12 bite-sized protein balls.

  2. Keep in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
